Devotion for Week of August 27, 2012 - OF THE TWO: WHOSE WILL LAST?

Isaiah 40:8, “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”

THOMAS PAINE came to these shores as an immigrant in 1787.  His gift of writing lifted him from poverty and obscurity to fame.  He inspired the American colonists to rise up against England and achieve their independence during the American Revolution.

At the high point of his success he wrote what he considered would be his masterpiece, “The Age of Reason”, a book he thoroughly expected would replace the Bible.

He made the prediction that this book would destroy the Bible by exposing it as a myth and legend.  He believed that within 100 years after the publication of his book, Bibles would only be found in museums or in the musty corners of secondhand bookstores.

I think time has proven that it is Paine’s book that was nothing but a myth and legend.  It is his book that we find in museums, and musty secondhand bookstores.  As for the Bible time, over 400 years, has done nothing to disprove its truth, but only enforced it as the only source of truth.
